What exactly is a Market Umbrella?

April 11, 2007

So just what do mean when you say market umbrella?  Are you talking about a patio umbrella for your back yard or an outdoor umbrella for a commercial application?

Is it really that important?  Probably not… However with the demands of patio furniture on the rise and many new styles available in the marketplace, the following clarifications might give you a better understanding about the differences between a patio umbrella and a wood market umbrella.

Traditionally a person would walk into an outdoor hardware store and ask for a market umbrella, generally inquiring about a “wood outdoor umbrella” specified for heavy duty outdoor applications such as restaurants or bistro areas.  The term market really came from the commercial industry as a term used for a shade umbrella to be used in the outdoor market place, hence the term Market Umbrella.

However, outdoor umbrellas have gone through many technological advances in recent times and the aluminum patio umbrella  has taken the place of traditional wood market umbrellas for many areas, and in particularly for the home back yard as well as many commercial pool areas. The strength and durability of Aluminum umbrellas are usually outstandingly greater.

Even if a wood market umbrella has a solid pole and is heavy duty, it probably won’t withstand a “beating” as well as the aluminum umbrella will, providing the aluminum umbrella is made of quality components. The flexibility in the aluminum composition greatly helps the aluminum umbrellas accomplishes the task.

As such, the old style and looks of traditional wood market umbrellas still win favor from many commercial buyers and considerable upgrades in quality have been added over the last few years, such as umbrellas with steel poles inserted into them and resin type compounds that are mixed with wood to give a sturdy but flexible pole.

Some of the newest designs that have been incorporated into wood umbrella technology are that of square or rectangle shapes that actually help give better sun control for square and rectangle patio tables.  One of the best reasons for a restaurant to utilize square umbrellas, is so that several tables can be pushed together for larger groups and the square umbrellas can actually fit together nicely for a more uniform shade area for the patrons.

So whether it’s a back yard patio umbrella you need or a commercial wood market umbrella, you now have the right terminology to use when search for the right outdoor décor item.
